Mufti Shamail Nadwi, also known as Shamail Ahmad Abdullah Nadwi (born 7 June 1998), has rapidly emerged as one of India’s notable young Islamic scholars and public speakers. While he has long been engaged in religious education and outreach, he gained widespread attention in 2025 following a nationally covered public debate on the existence of God with poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar in New Delhi. The debate showcased Nadwi’s ability to engage complex philosophical questions with clarity, composure, and intellectual rigor, marking him as a distinctive voice in contemporary religious and ethical discourse.

Born in Kolkata, West Bengal, Nadwi grew up in a family environment closely connected to Islamic scholarship. Nadwi came into national prominence during the December 2025 debate, “Does God Exist?”, held at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi and moderated by journalist Saurabh Dwivedi. Facing Javed Akhtar, a renowned poet and outspoken atheist, Nadwi navigated questions about metaphysics, morality, free will, and human suffering with poise and nuance.

Reports highlighted his argument that the question of God’s existence is fundamentally metaphysical rather than empirical, emphasizing moral responsibility, human agency, and the limits of scientific reasoning.
